Birdwatchers from all over the world visit the Gredos every year searching for specialities such as the bluethroat, ortolan bunting, citril finch and its numerous raptors.
Besides the birds of prey, bluethroats and ortolan buntings will greet you from the top of broom bushes during an easy walk through the higher grounds of the gently sloping Northern face. Dartford warblers will appear for a few seconds before hiding again in the bushes. Rock buntings, common accentors, northern wheatears, water pipit, red-billed choughs are common.
The alpine accentor also breeds here on the higher grounds. Down in the valleys where pine and oak woods grow, typical forest species including Citril finch, Crested Tit, Cross-bills, Great and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Bonelli’s warblers and many other species can be found. Along the mountain streams, Dippers, White, Grey and Yellow Wagtails are abundant.
The newly declared national park of Monfragüe is within easy reach from the Gredos and is one of our destinations. It will provide wonderful views of birds such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Stork, Bonelli’s Eagle, Eagle Owls, and typical Mediterranean species such as spectacled warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Orphean Warbler, as well as Lesser Kestrel and Black-shouldered Kite in the surrounding areas to name just a few.
